Happy February! It is a short month, especially with a week-long break in the middle, but we will be going at a fast pace!
January was a lot of fun, and it has also been nice to see everyone after the Christmas holidays.
Another great thing about the New Year, and about Grade One in general, is seeing all the amazing progress, especially in reading! At this age, the growth is enormous, and as I have already mentioned to the kids, one of my favourite parts of the day is sitting and reading with them. They are working so hard, and I am so proud of them!
We continue to do Daily 5 in our class. This week, a new aspect to the writing portion has been added. Each Tuesday, and Thursday, I will provide a new writing prompt. The prompts include a picture (dogs, for example), and some vocabulary words that fit with the picture. Students therefore have a choice of doing free-writing in their journals, or of choosing whichever prompt they would like to work on. Some of these prompts are pre-made, but students can always give me suggestions on new themes that they'd like to write on!

During French, we are also working on activities as a class. One such activity, for example, was the creation of snowmen during art class, and then talking about the snowman by use of descriptive writing.
The students now have a list of all the sight words we will be looking at until the end of the year. We practice these words in class, and the students are recording their progress with these news words in their Leader in Me binders, in the same manner that we did so with the previous group of sight words. These words will also be sent home. We like to practice reading and writing words through play, and constructing them out of fun things like pipe cleaners.
In math, we are working with numbers, especially by practicing our addition, and by counting by 2s.
In science, we are working on our 5 senses! I have been particularly impressed with how well the students have been remembering the tougher French vocab for the senses, with words such as "l'odorat"! We will be continuing have fun learning about the senses in February.
In Social Studies, we will be discussing "Notre Monde", "Our world". We will, of course, be focusing on smaller groups first, such as our families, and we will be constructing some family trees!
Please refer to the calendar this month, as there will be a lot going on, including a trip to the Galt Museum! If you would like to send Valentine's Day cards for our party on the 12th, I have sent home a list of the first names of the class. I will not be posting that document on this website, as I do not post the names of the students online, therefore please contact me if you have lost your copy.
Thank you!
